Job Description B’nai Israel Congregation has an opening for a Controller to manage and support the financial and accounting needs of the synagogue. In this role, you will be responsible for all financial operations, including the day to day and long-term initiatives of the synagogue. If you are currently an Assistant Controller or Senior Accounting Manager this is a great opportunity for you to take that next step in your career. This position requires solid analytic and communication skills as developed through previous positions, ideally with a not-for-profit organization and the ability to focus on the details and the big picture. The Controller is responsible for financial analysis, budgeting, expenditure control, endowment accounting, and coordination with independent accountants. In addition, the Controller will have oversight of the Accounting department and management of all administrative personnel therein. RESPONSIBILITIES: Budgeting Assist in the preparation, monitoring, and maintenance of the annual operating, capital and cemetery budgets. Oversee all expenditures as per budgetary guidelines and any applicable endowments. Provide financial reports to include monthly close, updates regarding actual vs. budget comparisons, and on variance and reasons for such variance from budget. Make recommendations to encourage the continuous improvement of financial performance and implementation of policies within the organization. Receivables Supervise and approve the allocation of incoming funds, posted to member accounts or General Ledger. Supervise processes for the billing and collection of receivables, including but not limited to membership dues, tuition fees, fees for facility use, etc. Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting; provide assistance on escalated issues related to the collection of membership dues and fees. Expenses Supervise and approve all expenditures according to budgetary guidelines. Maintain an overview of synagogue financial health; avoid unnecessary duplication of expenditures. Assist with processing payables as needed based on volume of work EXPERIENCE NEEDED: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, finance or similar disciple is required, with a CPA strongly preferred. 5+ years accounting experience and 2+ years financial management required, preferably in a non-profit setting. Prior experience as an Assistant Controller or Senior Accounting Manager strongly desired. Experience supervising others. Experience using QuickBooks or other accounting software. Experience using payroll software a plus. Proficiency using all MSOffice products (Word, Excel, Access a plus). Experience using a secular CRM system or other CRM tools.
